Association History
You have to know where you’ve been to know where you are going. Kappa holds a special place in its heart for Fraternity history, but every association of our organization has unique beginnings of its own. Each plays a part in shaping us today and continuing the Kappa tradition beyond college.
The Clearwater Bay Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded in 1956 by a group of women with the desire to expand the Kappa sisterhood beyond college into a lifetime in the Clearwater area.
Ten women met on February 16, 1956 and applied to be recognized as an Alumnae Club. The name Clearwater Bay was chosen at the suggestion of Mrs. Grace (Richard) Hendershot May. From the minutes of that afternoon luncheon at the Athletic Club of the Fort Harrison Hotel we know:
Dues of two dollars each were paid by the Charter Members, seven dollars of which will be sent to the National as the Charter Fee. Additional members will be asked to pay annual dues of one dollar.
We were officially recognized by the Fraternity on February 20 as the Clearwater Bay Alumnae Club of ΚΚΓ. From the date of our founding, we have strived to connect with Kappas to continue the tradition of community, leadership, philanthropy and friendship.
- On October 11, 1956, Clearwater Bay was invited by the St. Petersburg Alumnae to join them and the Tampa Kappa Alumnae for a Founders Day luncheon. That tradition of celebrating Founders Day with all area Kappas continues to this day!
- Did you know that ΚΚΓ was one of the founding members of the National PanHellenic Conference? Fittingly, in June of 1958, Mary Bissell, President of Clearwater Bay, reported meeting with eleven delegates from area sororities to form the Clearwater Inter-Sorority Council, later chartered in 1963 as the Clearwater Alumnae PanHellenic. Clearwater Bay continues to proudly support the Clearwater PanHellenic. We are represented by an appointed delegate from our Association and provide financial assistance with annual dues payments and scholarship fundraising.
On March 24, 1960, Clearwater Bay Club discussed becoming an Alumnae Association and signed the petition on May 20, 1960. The Clearwater Bay Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma received its Association Charter on May 31, 1960.
For more than sixty-five years, the Kappas of Clearwater Bay have preserved Kappa's mission of providing friendship and mutual support for a member's lifetime.
